Navigating the Rise in Retail Crime with Governor Newsom’s Support to Fight It

California and New York voters have highlighted retail crime as one of their biggest concerns this year. In an article recently published by RetailWire, “California and New York To Crack Down on Retail Theft in 2024”, author Lavina Suthenthrian wrote, “…trade associations and police departments advocate for government intervention to address the issue, reports CNBC”. Retailers and trade associations across the nation have been trying to get bills written and passed.

Fortunately for California, Governor Gavin Newsom has reacted and made theft a high priority. This attention could not come any sooner as retail store operators are being confronted with the safety and security concerns raised by customers and employees as well as the financial impact of financial losses stemming from damage to the property and stolen merchandise.

Peace of mind comes at a price and it was comforting to hear Governor Newsom say that the state will invest $1.1 billion over the next four years to address “safety and security.” Suthenthrian reported “According to his office, $373.5 million of the investment will be allocated to cracking down on organized retail theft. Newsom said in his state budget address that 52 sheriff and police departments have already been given $250 million in funding to combat retail theft. He added that district attorney’s offices are receiving support ahead of prosecution too. He emphasized, “We mean business in this space.”

In light of the alarming rise in retail crime and the proactive efforts of Governor Gavin Newsom to address this issue, it has become increasingly vital for property owners to prioritize the security and success of their retail spaces. The significant investment of $1.1 billion over the next four years in enhancing “safety and security” demonstrates the gravity of the situation.
